How to Avoid Frostbite (In Your Feet)

As the weather gets colder and colder, taking care of our feet remains just as crucial as in the warmer months. New challenges come with the shifting season, such as snow and ice and below zero temperatures in some parts of the world.

When it comes to protecting your feet, it’s more necessary than many people think. In the US alone, upwards of 1,300 people a year die from frostbite, and many more suffer. Hundreds of people every year lose limbs and appendages or get sick.

Here are four tips to avoid getting frostbite in your feet this season:

  1. Protect your feet and toes. Wearing extra thick socks or even an extra pair can help. Also, make sure your shoes fit correctly, and there isn’t extra room for cold air to get in. Steel tips boots will protect your toes from getting injured and add an extra layer against the snow.
  2. Make sure snow and ice cannot get inside of your shoes and socks. Wet clothing, including socks, dramatically increases the risk of frostbite.

  4. Know the first symptoms. The first signs of frostbite include a stinging, burning sensation followed by a lack of feeling. If you feel this numbness, head inside immediately and try to warm up the affected areas. If severe, contact your doctor directly.
